The difference between seam finding and seam tracking

Seam finding and seam tracking are two different functions used in welding automation. Both functions are important to optimize the efficiency and quality of the welding process, but they do different things and rely on different technologies.

The full name of seam finding is weld position finding. The principle is to detect the feature points of the weld through the laser weld detection instrument, and to perform position compensation and correction on the original program through the deviation between the detected feature point position and the saved original feature point position. The characteristic is that it is necessary to complete the teaching of all welding positions of the workpiece to ensure that the welding is accurately applied to the weld, which is very important to ensure the strength and integrity of the welding. Seam finding helps reduce defects such as nicks, overfill, and burn-through for all types of welds with misplaced seam positions and multi-segment welds.

The seam tracking is named after the change of the position of the seam that can be tracked in real time. The principle is a function of correcting the current position of the robot by detecting changes in weld feature points in real time. The feature is that it only needs to teach the start and end positions of a segment of the weld to complete the overall trajectory of the weld. The purpose of seam tracking is to ensure that welds are applied precisely to the seam, even if the seam changes position or shape. This is very important to ensure weld strength and consistency, especially for welding jobs where long welds have distortions, S-welds with curves. Avoid welding deviation and failure to weld due to changes in the shape of the weld seam, and also avoid the trouble of interpolating a large number of points.

According to actual production needs, adding a weld location or weld tracking system can improve the welding efficiency of the welding robot, reduce the working time and difficulty, and improve the welding quality of the robot.
